UPDATE: After the great success of last year’s performances, the Teatro San Carlo will repeat – in summer 2021 – the series of open-air performances in Naples’ main square Piazza del Plebiscito, with great artists and in compliance with the current Covid-19 regulations. Elīna Garanča and Anna Netrebko will be among the international artists on stage. The performances will be held in June and July 2021.
The Teatro San Carlo in Naples boasts a record of all respect: it is the most ancient opera house in the world. The theater was built in 1737 under King Charles III of Spain. At that time, neither the Scala in Milan nor the Fenice in Venice had been built already. Since then, the San Carlo has always stood for great quality. A number of renowned artists – such as Rossini, Bellini, Verdi and Paganini – decided to perform their premieres in Naples.
Even today, the San Carlo theater is a certainty when it comes to quality. The operas, concerts and ballets staged in Naples never let down in terms of talented artists. What is more, the city of Naples itself is worth a visit. It is a city of a thousand faces, whose history experienced various cultures and peoples, who have enriched Naples’ heritage up to present times. It must be the squares, the streets, the folklore, or the stunning view over the Vesuvius volcano, that impressed German writer Goethe so much that he wrote what has become a proverb known by most Italians: “See Naples and then die“. In other words, one should experience Naples at least once in their life.
As the San Carlo offers performances of all kinds and almost throughout the year, it is always a good occasion to come to Naples for a music and folklore experience. It is undoubtedly worth it!
